Yan Wagner est un producteur et dj franco-américain né à Paris. Dès l’adolescence, fortement inspiré par DAF, Depeche Mode ou Joy Division, il est clavier dans différents groupes amateurs. En 2007, il fonde, avec son acolyte Adrien Gémonet, le duo Chairs on Backs. Ils signent un unique EP, Perverts Teens, sur le label parisien Missive. Le projet s’essouffle ; Yan s’envole par la suite pour New-York pour rédiger une thèse sur l’histoire du clubbing, il s’y aguerrit sur scène dans des petits clubs, son projet solo se précise, et, de retour à Paris, il signe le titre Recession Song sur un “various artists” du label parisien deBonton, également playlisté sur une compilation Kitsuné. Il enchaîne alors les dates dans les clubs de la capitale. En parallèle, il chante au sein du groupe Flying Turns aux côtés de David Marcos, Gesaffelstein, et Rudy Gueniche. En 2012, il produit le maxi Turmoil pour le label UNO NYC. Invité à chanter lors d’une soirée hommage à Jacno à la Cité de la Musique, il y rencontre Etienne Daho, figure de proue de la scène pop française. Il fait la connaissance d’Arnaud Rebotini de Black Strobe, qui lui propose de sortir son premier album Forty-Eight Hours s’il ne trouve pas de label. Il signe finalement un contrat avec Pschent et introduit Rebotini à la production, les influences wave et EBM associées aux machines de ce dernier se font clairement ressentir, ils peaufinent ensemble, dans son studio, ce premier opus sur lequel Daho co-interprète le titre “The Only One”. Il se produit en live dans les gros festivals comme Les Francofolies de la Rochelle, Les Vieilles Charrues, ou La Route du Rock, et est également booké en dj set un peu partout dans l’hexagone. Il effectue plusieurs remixes, notamment pour Black Strobe, Bufi & La Royale ; Yan Wagner pose également sa voix sur le titre Gasoline du groupe Acid Washed et Crash Course sur le premier EP de son compère La Mverte. Récemment, Yan Wagner a produit un remixe pour Date with Elvis sur le label marseillais La Dame Noir Records, en prépare un autre pour l’anglais Tronik Youth sur son nouveau label Nein Records qui devrait sortir début 2015. Il sortira avant la fin de l’année, sous son nouveau pseudonyme The Populists, un premier EP “Soft Power” sur le label Space Factory de David Carretta, résolument plus “électro analogique”, aux relents new-beat parfois, dénué de voix et de cette touche pop assez caractéristique de ses productions antérieures. Par ailleurs, un deuxième EP est en préparation pour début 2015 sur un autre label, des lives sous ce nom sont également à prévoir. Désormais affranchi du label Pschent, il avance actuellement sur son deuxième album, se donnant du temps pour réfléchir à la manière de le sortir.
Yan Wagner is a Franco-American producer & dj born in Paris. In his teenage years, strongly inspired by DAF, Depeche Mode or Joy Division, he’s keyboardist in various demo groups. In 2007, he teams up Chairs on Backs duet with his mate Adrien Gémonet, they sign a unique EP Perverts Teens on parisian label Missive. The project loses momentum and Yan Wagner moves to New-York in order to write a thesis on clubbing, there he performs in small clubs with his solo project under moniker Wagner. Then, back in Paris, he writes Recession Song signed on a “various artist” by label deBonton, and also playlisted on a kitsuné compilation, then he plays a serie of concerts in Parisian clubs. At the same time he sings in the group Flying Turns alongside David Marcos, Gesaffelstein, and Rudy Gueniche. In 2012, he produces Turmoil EP on UNO NYC label. Invited to perform during a concert in tribute to Jacno at La Cité de la musique, he meets Etienne Daho, leading figure of the french pop scene. He hits it off with Arnaud Rebotini from Black Strobe fame, who offers him to release his album Forty-Eight Hours, he finally signs a contract with Pschent, and introduces Rebotini in the production. Rebotini‘s machines associated to his wave and EBM influences really come across this first album , together they fine it in his studio, and Etienne Daho co-interprets “The Only One” song. Then, Yan Wagner performs in the big French festivals like Les Francofolies de la Rochelle, Les Vieilles Charrues, or La Route du Rock, he’s also booked as a dj all around France. He makes several remixes especially for Black Strobe, Bufi & La Royale ; Yan also sings on Gasoline of Acid Washed duet, and Crash Course on the first EP of his mate La Mverte. Recently, he’s produced a remix for Date with Elvis on Marseilles label La Dame Noir Records, and one for Tronik Youth on his new label Nein Records that should be out early 2015. He will release before the end of the yearn under his new moniker The Populists, a first EP “Soft Power” on David Carretta‘s label Space Factory, resolutely focused on analog electro, even new-beat, without vocals and pop aspect of his usual productions. A second EP will be out at the beginning of 2015 on another label, and performances under this moniker will follow. Now liberated from Pschent label, Yan Wagner he’s working on his second album, taking his time to think about the best way to release it.
